Here’s a list of popular beaches to bring your pooch!
Montauk Beach
Dogs are not allowed on the beaches between 9am and 6pm from May 15 through the end of September. No restrictions apply for the remainder of the year. Montauk has no leash laws and dogs may run on the beach with supervision when permitted. Owners are expected to exercise control, particularly on crowded beaches, and to clean up after their dogs. The beach can be accessed through several points along Old Montauk Highway or right in the center of town.
Town of East Hampton Beaches
Dogs are welcome off-leash anytime in the off-season. From the second Sunday in May through September 30, dogs are not permitted on the beach at all from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily. At all other times during this period, dogs must be manually restrained on a leash within 300 feet of any road end along the beaches. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Plastic bags are provided at the entrance to each village beach.

Heckscher State Park
Located on the shore of the Great South Bay at East Islip in Suffolk County. Dogs must be kept on a leash 6 feet in length or shorter, with access to undeveloped areas only. Please do not bring your dog to the camping areas.
Fire Island National Seashore
A 26-mile National Seashore protecting a section of Fire Island, separated from Long Island by the Great South Bay. Some beaches allow dogs between March 15 and Labor Day. During summer, dogs are permitted on the bayside beaches of Fire Island Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, Talisman/Barrett Beach, Watch Hill, and some boardwalks. Dogs are never permitted in buildings, designated lifeguard areas, picnic areas, or wildlife protection areas. Dog fare is charged by some ferries.
Village of Ocean Beach Dogs are permitted on the beach during the off-season only — September 16 to May 14.
Camp Hero State Park
Located on Montauk Point, offering a beach, fishing, hiking, a bridle path, biking, and cross-country skiing. It is the former site of Montauk Air Force Station. Dogs are permitted year-round when kept on a 6-foot maximum leash.
Hither Hills State Park
Located on the southern shore near the eastern tip of Long Island in Suffolk County at Napeague. Dogs are permitted north of Montauk Parkway, east of Napeague Harbor, and west of overlook parking. All dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Dogs are never permitted in camping, bathing, or picnic areas, in buildings, or on walkways.
Shadmoor State Park
A 99-acre state park located in East Hampton, one quarter-mile east of Montauk village. Dogs are welcome year-round when kept on a 6-foot leash.
Town Owned Beaches, Southampton
Dogs are permitted on all town beaches from October 1 to April 1, but must be kept 50 feet away from any endangered species protection areas.
Southampton Town Access Road Beaches Dogs are permitted within 150 feet of the permit-parking section at all times, except from July 1 through Labor Day when they are permitted before 9am and after 6pm.

Village of Southampton Dogs must be on a leash at all times including on the beach. No time restrictions during beach season as long as the dog is leashed and under control.

Gardiner County Park
Leashed dogs are permitted on the beaches and trails.
Nassau Beach Park
Open to dogs when birds aren’t nesting — September 15 to March 1. A dog park is also available off Lido Avenue at Nickerson Beach Park.
Smith Point County Park
Located on the Atlantic Ocean on the east end of Fire Island in central Long Island by Shirley. The largest park owned by Suffolk County, extending from the Fire Island Wilderness to the tip of the island at Moriches Inlet.
Amagansett Beach
Open for dogs year-round but only before 10:00am and after 6:00pm between May 15 and September 15. Behind the beach is a rare double dune system — watch out for Fowler’s Toad when exploring the dunes.
Havens Beach, Sag Harbor
Pets are not permitted from the Thursday before Memorial Day to the Tuesday following Labor Day. Purchase a nonresident beach parking permit at Sag Harbor Municipal Hall.
Quogue Village Beach
Pets not permitted from the Friday before Memorial Day to September 15. Otherwise enjoy the beach off-leash under voice control.
Outer Beach, Theodore Roosevelt County Park
Located at the end of East Lake Road. Accessible by hiking from the Big Reed Nature Trail. A small sandy beach on the west side of East Lake Road is an East Hampton Township preserve.
Cedar Point Beach, Cedar Point County Park
Over a mile of frontage on Gardiner’s Bay. Mostly cobbles — stay close to the water for easy hiking.
Wades Beach, Shelter Island
Located on Midway Road, west of Route 114. Five hundred yards of soft sand beach on the north shore of Shelter Island Sound. Note that the Mashomack Preserve on the island does not allow dogs.
Long Beach Park, Noyack
Shallow, aqua-tinged water on a long curving beach at Noyack Bay. Dogs are allowed year-round in designated areas. Gentle waves make it ideal for canine swimmers of all levels.
Indian Island Beach, Indian Island County Park
A 275-acre county park in Flanders Bay with a crescent-shaped strip of thick sand connecting Indian Island to the mainland. Campsites, picnic tables, and a playground also available.
Orient Point Beach, Orient
Maritime forest, bay beachfront, and saltwater marsh at the tip of the North Fork. A half-mile trail leads to over a mile of beach on the Long Island Sound. Suffolk County maintains 48 acres of open space here.
